Ohio Chapter ISA Presents
June 4, 2020
Time: 1:00 pm - 3:30pm
The Ohio Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture invites you to learn about "The Real Story about Tree Roots."
Tree roots are mostly invisible and not well understood by many, yet they give sustenance and support for all plants. In many cases, we take tree roots for granted, and they are often improperly managed by the cultural activities in the modern-day landscape. Because tree roots live, die, grow and function mostly out of sight, many people have developed some assumptions about how and when roots grow, especially when it comes to trees. These mistaken ideas influence how long trees can live and die. Learn how many common day landscape management practices like improper tree selection, herbicides use, poor-planting techniques, improper watering, volcano-mulching, root cuts, and improper fertilization will likely reduce a tree's life.
This class will forever change the way you understand how tree roots form, grow, and function.
You will learn about:
- tree carbohydrate allocation and water use,
- the parts of a tree's root system,
- morphology of tree root architecture,
- how tree roots expand and colonize the soil,
- how much soil volume a tree needs to flourish,
- how frequently tree roots die,
- how tree roots function,
- how herbicides influence tree roots,
- the seasons and species differences of when tree roots grow,
- how tree roots manage decay,
- differences in root architecture of tree species, and
- influences that affect tree root architecture.
Purpose: This educational program is for Master Gardeners, ISA Certified Arborists, tree owners, landscape contractors, foresters, lawn care providers, and other green industry professionals interested in learning about how tree roots function, form, are affected by herbicides, deal with decay, and how different species have vastly different root configurations.
ISA Continuing Education Units: 2.5 Certified Arborist, 2.5 Municipal Specialist, 1.5 BCMA-Science, .5 BCMA-Practice, .5 BCMA-Management; 1 OCNT; 2.5 Cat 1 SAF
