What is the TPAQ Program?
The Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualification (TPAQ) program, developed by the American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA), is an interactive training experience that delves into the concepts contained in the 10th edition of the Guide for Plant Appraisal. Using instructor-led discussions and case scenarios to illustrate concepts, you will become proficient in conducting appraisals using the various approaches contained in the guide.
The training culminates with an open-book exam that tests attendees on their comprehension of the material and concepts. Successful candidates will receive a certificate and be entitled to list TPAQ as a credential.
Modeled after the ISA’s Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ), the course features cooperative argumentative dialogue between the instructor and course participants, to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions. ISA TRAQ and/or certified arborist credentials along with prior experience in plant or other appraisal techniques (assigning dollar values) are strongly encouraged but are not a requirement. Participants must have and read the 10th edition Guide to Plant Appraisal prior to attending the class.
Meet the Instructor
R.J. Laverne is manager of education and training at Davey Institute. He is responsible for all Davey training programs including Davey’s flagship training program, Davey Institute of Tree Sciences.
R.J. began his career with Davey Resource Group in 1997 as a consulting arborist and project manager for urban forestry clients. He is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist and an ASCA registered Consulting Arborist. He has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan, B.S. in Forestry from Michigan Technological University, an M.S. in Remote Sensing from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Public Affairs from Cleveland State University.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will:
- Describe the economic principles that underlay plant appraisal.
- Describe the types of field data needed to inform plant appraisal methods and techniques.
- Define the cost compounding methods within the income approach and understand its relationship to the i-Tree suite of urban forestry management and assessment tools.
- Define the research about the contribution of trees and landscape to real estate market value and its application to plant appraisal.
- Discuss the methods and techniques within the cost approach, particularly the direct, reproduction, and cost forwarding methods.
- Define reasoned judgments about the value of trees and landscape plants.

Maintaining Your Credential:
The ASCA TPAQ credential is valid for five years from the date earned. To maintain the credential, TPAQ holders must retake the TPAQ course and pass the exam every five years, or when the Guide for Plant Appraisals is updated – whichever comes first.
Eligibility:
Attendees must have a minimum of three years of experience in arboriculture, horticulture, forestry, landscape contracting, or landscape architecture/design.
Member rates apply to individuals who are members of the American Society of Consulting Arborists.
